Skiing in Zermatt

We took a sight seeing train on Sunday to Gornergrat for some mountain vistas. The mountain behind us is the Matterhorn.

Last weekend, Matt and I joined some friends from KPMG (on rotation in Dublin) at the ski town of Zermatt, Switzerland. The five us of spent the weekend in the beautiful Alps, skiing and taking in the incredible sites. It was Matt's first time skiing and he did great. (We're all still a little sore though!)
Zermatt is home to one of Switzerland's most photographed mountain, the Matterhorn. While it stands at an impressive 14,693 feet, it is not the highest in the country. Monte Rosa on the Swiss/Italian border is 15,203 feet. In fact, this mountain range is so close to the border, that you can actually ski into Italy for a hot cocoa break, then continue on down the mountain back into Switzerland.
The proper ski season is actually late December through March. However, the unique thing about Zermatt is the high mountain skiing there is actually on a glacier, so you can hit the slopes year round. We only saw about 20% of the runs open. (Which was still enough to keep the skiiers quite busy.) We loved the weekend and already are planning to go back.
