A Sunday Stroll
My free plate of Basler Rösti mit Läckerli-Gewürzen at the train station
(Basically - it was chicken, potato, & veggies)
Didn't get a picture of the band playing because I was too busy chowing down, but this photo gives you an idea of the type of mask they were wearing
Sunday driving takes on a whole new meaning here in Zürich - especially when you don't have a car. To take advantage of the near 50 degree temperatures (yes, I'm talking fahrenheit, I just can't get myself on the celsius yet) we took a tram up the Zürichberg hill. There are some great walking paths in this area, and we are definitely not the only ones that know about them judging by the sworms Zürichers out for the same walk.
We made our way back down to the Hauptbanhof (main train station) to grab a bit of lunch. I scoffed at the idea we would be seeking out food at a train station. Not too long ago, this would be the same to me as dropping by O'Hare Airport for a meal - just not good sense for time, tongue, or the wallet. But at Zürich HB, it's different. There is a variety of food offered, from the quick takeaway stand to the sit down formal dining experience.
As we walked into the main hall of HB we were immediately drawn to the loud musical instruments being played at the other end. The city of Basel had set up an impressive promotional display in an attempt to lure visitors to their Carnival festivities. The band was in the traditional Carnival dress, the Hilton Hotel was dishing out plates of free food (always gets my attention), and trivia games about Basel and how to quickly travel there were being played. We didn't see what the prize was, but we manage to snag a Basler Läckerli cookie before heading on to lunch at a panini diner.
We're resting up now as we'll be watching some of the Superbowl tonight. Starts at half past midnight. And you thought you had a late kick off in the States...
