A work trip for Matt turned into a great opportunity for us to weekend on the Island of Mallorca in Spain. We rented a car and drove the 45 minutes from the main city of Palma to the resort town of Alcudia. The waters here are very calm as a result of a large shelf created from the protected bay area. Since you are able to walk for almost 50 yards into the water without getting much more then knee deep, it is a popular tourist area for families, particularly the British. We were able, however, to find a few quiet places to escape the toddlers and strollers and actually enjoyed having so many English speakers around us. The strip of tourist restaurants and shops included a Pizza Hut and KFC. We ate at both more then once over the weekend. It was nice to get a fast food fix! The pubs were lively at night, most offering Sky TV broadcasts of soccer matches, obviously catering to the UK crowd. (A few of the pubs were actually run by some Brits.)
On our way back to Palma on Sunday to catch our late evening flight back to Zürich, we were able to drive through several other Mallorca towns on the eastern coastline. We stumbled into some other resort areas, which also looked enticing. What struck me was how varied the terrain was of the beach areas and how rough the sea could be in some spots. But the water was beautiful everyone, as blue as the Caribbean.
We were able to make one last beach stop in Palma before returning the rental car. Ca'n Pastilla is just 10 minutes from the airport and had a great wide band of sand and plenty of restaurants and entertainment along the way. They have also created a nice boardwalk which made it easy for walkers and bicyclists which connected up with another popular beach area of S'Arsenal. While we enjoyed our time here, it wasn't as peaceful as some of the other parts of the island, especially seeing and hearing some of the airplanes overhead.
It was a quick but very relaxing weekend - and we are keeping our eyes out for deals so we can make a return trip!
