Christmastime in Zürich
Just a few pictures from around town:
The "Swarovski Tree" in the Christmas Market located at Hauptbanhof (main train station) is drenched in over 5,000 crystals and is a sight to behold!
The Credit Suisse building at Paradeplatz does a great job lighting their building, and their enormous tree is pretty neat too.
The Märlitram is a Zürich favorite. It's driven around town by St. Nick while a tram full of children are read holiday stories by angels. Since it operates both afternoon and evening, I see this at least once a day. St. Nick usually waves at me!
The "Fondue Dinner Tram" travels down the main shopping street, the Banhofstrasse. The wonderful LED lights you see above the tram is Zürich's controversial seasonal light installation. The 275 lighting rods covering roughing .7 mile has been deemed the "World's Largest Time Piece" - by whom I'm not so sure. Essentially, the lights change design throughout the day and season from it's lighting this year on November 22 until January 2. Apparently these LED lights are suppose to be much easier to maintain and use 13, 200 kWh vs. 84,000 kWh, but the general consesus is they're ugly and probably will be the last year for them.
Not just for the holidays, but more of these Raclette (cheese) stands pop up around this time at the Christmas Markets. The cheese melts under a heating coil, then is scraped off onto a piece of bread or onto some boiled potatoes. Often served with pickled spring onions and gerkins. Wash it down with a white wine or the ever popular mulled spice wine - Glüwein!
