Ringing in the New Year
On New Year's Day, Dave, Matt, and I started out our 4 days of travel with a visit to Münich. After checking into our hostel, we had time to tour the downtown area before dark, then off to the Hofbrauhaus for dinner. Upon discussion amongst the three of us, it was decided that a trip to the Dachau concentration camp just outside Münich was obligatory. The impressions the Memorial site left on us were heavy, though I believe we were all glad to have gone.
We then drove less then 2 hours on to Salzburg for an overnight. The highlight there was the Hohensalzburg fortress. While Matt and I were in Salzburg last May, we didn't have time to fully explore the fortress then, and we were happy to have a second go around at it. The site was very well organized with many great exhibits and views of the town and surrounding area. Little did we know it was the most visited tourist attraction in Austria.
After the fortress we drove on to Innsbrück for our date with a bobsled run. As the site of the Winter Olympic Games in 1964 and 1976, Innsbrück have opened their facilities to the public to enjoy. We were able to go last Thursday night during one of these times when the bobsledding run is open. For a mere 30 Euros per person, you get the thrill of riding between 80 - 100 km/hour in a sled (adapted for the public) driven by a professional down the course of 10 twists and turns and 850 meters of drop. WOW! It was amazing and has given me a whole new respect for the sport.
The last day of the trip we drove through the tiny country of Liechtenstein and stopped in the capital of Vaduz for lunch before returning back to Zürich.
Even though we were all a little schnitzeled out by the end of it all, we had a great time travelling with Dave and are really glad he made the trip.
