Markets and Mosques of Cairo
Our second day in Cairo we were met by our guide Debbie and driver Tarak to take us to the skirts of the City of the Dead, the Citadel, the Mosques of Qurqumas and Muhammad Ali, the Coptic Christian churches of Muqattam, and the market of Khan Al-Khalili.
A group of school kids at the Citadel loved saying hello to the tourists. After taking their picture they wanted their pictures taken with us! They were very sweet.

A small glimpse from the Citadel over a city of 20+ million people. You can see it so well here but the rooftops of the city is a sea of satellite dishes.
The community of Muqattam developed around 1970 and consists of 30,000 people, several thousand of which are garbage workers who collect refuse (and small tips) from the city to recycle. The mostly Coptic Christian people were forcibly resettled in the abandoned quarry at the foot of a small mountain. Initially there was no running water, electricity, markets, schools, churches, or medical care. Now there are 3 schools, a hospital, and several churches - but I still wouldn't want to live there.
The St. Simon the Tanner Coptic Orthodox Church built into the moutain at Muqattam. This amphitheater seats 15,000 people and is the largest assembly point for the Coptic Christians of Cairo.
